Components and Characteristics of Bone
Bone is the rigid supporting tissue of the skeleton. It is composed of an inorganic mineral matrix (eg, calcium salts) which produces the characteristic hardness of bone, as well as an organic component (primarily protein) which contributes to the elasticity of bone.1,2 Bone performs many functions in the body, including support of the skeleton, protection of vital organs, movement, storage of essential minerals, and formation of blood cells.1 Maintaining healthy bones is essential for overall health.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Ipriflavone
Ipriflavone is an isoflavone.3 It has been widely studied in humans and found effective in supporting bone health. Although its chemical structure is similar to that of naturally-occurring phytoestrogens, research has shown that ipriflavone does not exert estrogenic effects on the neuroendocrine system.4
Studies have shown that ipriflavone helps maintain bone mass.5 An additional study reported that ipriflavone helped support vertebral bone density in subjects who were treated with ipriflavone when compared to subjects treated with a placebo.6 Further support was reported in a study that compared the combined treatment of ipriflavone and vitamin D versus treatment with ipriflavone only, vitamin D only, or placebo. It was found that the combination treatment provided the greatest benefit.7
