Most of the cholesterol in the bloodstream is produced in the liver, with a smaller amount derived from the diet. Addressing cholesterol's production in the liver and its absorption in the gastrointestinal tract can be of benefit in maintaining already normal cholesterol levels.*

Pharmacol-40 is derived from chitin found in crab and shrimp shells. Pharmacol-40 is a large molecule that resists digestion and is not well-absorbed into the bloodstream. Instead, remaining in the gastrointestinal tract it readily attaches to dietary cholesterol and forms an insoluble complex that is not well-absorbed.* Pharmacol-40 also can bind to the cholesterol produced in the liver and secreted in the bile, reducing its reabsorption in the intestines.*

In a placebo-controlled, multicenter clinical trial, 105 subjects were randomized to receive HEP-40 (the active ingredient in Pharmacol-40) at varying amounts or placebo, and were evaluated every four weeks for 12 weeks. Significant results in maintaining optimal cholesterol levels were observed compared to placebo.* In addition, because Pharmacol-40 can bind to cholesterol in the gut, the researchers assessed whether fat-soluble vitamin absorption might also be inhibited. Vitamin D levels were tested in a random sample of 91 subjects (with 22 in the placebo group) at the beginning and end of the study, and it was determined the ingredient in Pharmacol-40 does not interfere with vitamin D absorption.*

Pharmacol-40 has shown significant benefit by itself, and it can be used in conjunction with Choleast and Super EPA for optimize maintenance of already normal cholesterol levels.
